The UNESCO World Heritage Programme

The objective of the International Convention for the protection of the culture and natural heritage of the world is to preserve cultural and natural sites with exceptional, universal value.

Approval as a world cultural heritage site

Member states can submit proposals for World Heritage site to the UNESCO. Thereafter a committee examines if the site is of exceptional universal value. This is the case when the suggestion fulfils at least one of the criteria in the criteria catalogue. Criteria are, for example, unique artistic performance or considerable influence on architecture, monumental sculptures or urban development and the landscape design during a time period or in a cultural area.
